Each Van Houtte® coffee has a unique character all its own. And it’s time to let your coffee’s inner beauty shine through by learning how to make latte art at home! Whether you prefer classic decorations or show-stopping latte art designs, our techniques make it simple to create perfect latte art that’s nothing short of a masterpiece.

Create Perfect Latte Art by Pouring a Classic Heart or Flower

When learning how to make latte art, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the classic pouring technique often seen at coffeehouses. Knowing how to pour latte art like this is simpler than it may seem!

First, brew a shot of one of our coffee varieties that go perfectly with milk, such as Van Houtte® Espresso Superiore coffee. Then, whip up some microfoam in a milk frothing pitcher using a steam wand. To create a heart, pour steamed milk into the centre of the cup while moving the pitcher slightly from side to side, until a large spot of foam appears. Then, finish the heart by pouring foam forward in a straight line.

To create a flower, slowly pour steamed milk into the centre of the cup, then lower the pitcher closer to the cup and pour faster. Tilt the cup slightly and wiggle the pitcher back and forth to create a zig-zag. Straighten the cup, slow down, and pour a line of foam through the centre of the design to give the appearance of a flower.

Remember, when it comes to learning how to make latte art, practice makes perfect!

Latte Art Techniques: Try Stencils for Precise Designs

If you’d like to know how to make latte art that’s simple yet stunning, look no further than latte stencils. It all starts with a freshly-brewed cup of Van Houtte® House Blend Dark or Espresso Superiore coffee.

Froth milk using a milk frother and pour it slowly onto the coffee. Once the coffee surface is covered, hold a latte stencil close to the surface and sprinkle cinnamon or cocoa powder over it to create a design.

Feeling creative? Try making your own stencil by cutting a shape into a piece of rigid paper or plastic. You can create customized latte art featuring the image or letter of your choice!
